الماضي المستمر يصف شيئًا كان يحدث في لحظة معينة من الماضي: «في الثامنة مساء أمس كنت أشاهد التلفاز» = At eight o'clock last night I was watching TV.

التكوين: الفاعل + was / were + الفعل مع ing.

متى نستخدمه؟ لحدث كان مستمرًا في وقت محدد من الماضي — بدأ قبله ولم ينتهِ بعد في تلك اللحظة.
- At 10 o'clock yesterday, I was sleeping.
- This time last year, we were living in Amman.
- What were you doing at 7:30 this morning?
قارن: I am working now (الآن) ← I was working at 8 yesterday (كنت أعمل في الثامنة أمس).
والأفعال مثل know, want, like لا تأتي مع ing في الماضي أيضًا.
